One of the most challenging aspects of working with marble is simply getting it where it is going in one piece — literally.
Marble is a natural stone that is mined from the ground in places like Italy, eastern Europe, and even some quarries in the United States. Crude marble is refined in a mill then cut into sheets which are then transported to manufacturers for final sizing and finishing. When consumers order marble countertops and other surfaces, the pieces are typically cut to order then transported either in pieces or in whole sheets to the installation site.
Safe Transportation
This is usually the tricky part. Finished marble pieces cut into custom sizes are when the stone is the most vulnerable. Because they are thinner and awkwardly shaped, they are more prone to chipping, cracking, or splitting unless they are handled with extreme care and caution.
Marble sheets are generally loaded onto the backs of special trucks fitted with racking, padding, and spring-loaded strapping that securely hold them in place and prevent damage from bumping, bouncing, and other movements. When they arrive at their destination, they are carefully unloaded and usually carried by hand into position, where they can be secured for permanent use.
Quality Inspection
Buyers or their representatives need to check their marble for flaws or damage caused during transport to ensure the quality of their materials. If the marble has cracks, chips, or dings, it should not be accepted. Any damage found later typically can be fixed, but the cost of those repairs may fall on the owners rather than the company doing the transporting and installation. Damaged marble rejected prior to installation often is the responsibility of the provider.
